Imagine looking at your daily schedule and seeing a particular patient (or client, if that's your vernacular) pop up. You groan and think to yourself “Ugh.”

Despite loving your job and helping others, you dread the upcoming appointment. Your chest feels heavy and you realize that you’re holding your breath. There’s tension in your neck. You notice the creeping of uneasiness in your stomach and find yourself already feeling frustrated before even seeing them.

It feels like nothing you have tried is working.

They continue to come in week after week with the same complaints. You feel defeated and incapable...or maybe a little angry at your patient.

What if there was a way to understand what might be interfering with their healing? What if you were able to figure out why their progress was hindered and knew what to do about it? Think about how empowering it would feel for you and your clients. Consider how it might help you build a positive reputation and help bring in business to be known as someone who can help when others have given up.

Bessel Van der Kolk, a leading researcher of trauma in the psychiatric world, explains "traumatized people chronically feel unsafe inside their bodies; the past is alive in the form of gnawing interior discomfort. Their bodies are constantly bombarded by visceral warning signs, and, in an attempt to control these processes, they often become expert at ignoring their gut feelings and in numbing awareness of what is played out inside. They learn to hide from their selves." In essence, when people have a history of trauma, their bodies can really struggle to calm, much less heal. If you want to help them heal, you have to understand the mechanism of a traumatic response and how to help settle their nervous system.

Now think about those situations when an appointment flips so quickly you struggle to know what's going on. We're talking about the patient that suddenly bursts into tears and starts to verbal vomit...you know, telling you an overwhelming amount of detail about the worst moments of their lives. They don't even seem present. They're lost in the past.

Do you know what to do in those moments?

How about when a client suddenly becomes angry and volatile over something seemingly insignificant? How do you protect yourself while still making the patient feel understood? How do you manage the situation without making it worse?

"[Katy] gave wonderful real life examples and facilitated conversations about patient scenarios."

"[Katy] did a great job explaining trauma responses, "monkey brain/lizard brain" in more simple terms -- didn't have to use psychotherapy jargon for us to understand; also gave us the vocabulary to be able to use with out patients when discussing things like this in our practice."

"I liked how it was a lot of [us] talking, very interactive; I didn't feel like I was just getting lectured to for 2 days"

Hope For The Journey is a counseling group in Texas that helps kids, adults, parents, and partners across Texas to heal and thrive after trauma with counseling that works.

Our mission is to heal trauma, but we recognize that there are many other pathways to healing besides just counseling. So, we also work tirelessly to educate and empower other healing professionals to recognize trauma and know how to safely de-escalate situations when a trauma reaction impacts their work.

Once you know what to do when someone is having a trauma reaction, you can truly create the safety and healing environment your clients or patients need to progress.

Build Confidence

When your profession involves helping people up close, you have a higher likelihood of running into a trauma reaction. You aren't a counselor, but you CAN learn what to look for and what to do in these situations.

Protect Yourself

Understanding trauma responses helps you avoid unnecessary conflict, take things less personally, and help more people. This means fewer negative Google reviews and complaints.

Build Business

Developing a specialization as a trauma-sensitive provider will bring you business and keep that business around longer. Word-of-mouth referrals are the best kind to fuel your practice!
